Dr. Randy Birken, and his two nurse practitioners, are trained in weight management medicine.
“There are many aspects to effective weight loss,” Dr. Birken said. “Obviously, proper diet and consistent exercise are key. But there are some patients who need more to boost metabolism.”
Dr. Birken has taken many hours of continuing medical education courses from The American Obesity Association, including lectures on the different types of available medications.
“It’s a fascinating science,” Dr. Birken continued. “The connection between the brain, stomach, pancreas, and fat cells is complex. So finding the right metabolic enhancer is an individual quest.”
In addition to the commercially available “diet pills,” there are compounded formulations that may be more effective. One capsule contains phentermine,a sympathomimetic, with naltrexone, an opioid antagonist in a sustained release formation. The other is phentermine, naltrexone, and metformin, a medication that lowers insulin and promotes fat loss. also in a sustained released capsule.
“These formulations promote weight loss as well as decrease cravings. Many patients experience more energy and feel more motivated with their diet and exercise as they see results.”
It is important to have baseline weight measurements that include body fat, muscle mass, BMI, and fat %. And it’s important to have regular followups to assess results as well.
